How does Neuralink work ?
Neuralink’s technology actually works like a bridge between the human brain and the external device. Neuralink’s core chip is BMI i.e. Brain Machine Interface which uses ultra fine threads and sophisticated chips.
This chip communicates directly with a specific part of the human brain. These threads are so small that surgical robots are required to accurately connect the chip to the part of the brain. This BMI catches the electrical signals of the neurons inside the brain and converts them into digital commands. Meaning, if you think that you have to lift your hand, then this thought, which is essentially an electrical signal, is caught and sent to the machine arm, allowing the prosthetic arm to be lifted without any physical energy.
This was just an example, in reality the potential is even more. The aim of the Neuralink chip in the brain is to make connections with millions of neurons. Each thread present in the chip, which is very thin, approximately equal to the thickness of a human hair, that one thread has the ability to talk to more than a thousand neurons. These direct neuron connections enable high fidity and real time communication.
How is Neuralink inserted into the brain ?
It takes a lot of surgical precision to insert the Neuralink BMI chip into the brain. A highly sophisticated robotic system is required to implant Neuralink. These robots not only place the thread precisely and easily, but most importantly, also ensure that the brain tissue is not damaged. A precise and minimally invasive approach is adopted, that is, an attempt is made to disturb the brain as little as possible.
Neuralink brain chip cost ?
Developing and producing advanced technologies like Neuralink is very expensive. High-end materials, precision engineering and sophisticated software development are involved, which increases the initial cost. Sophisticated surgery is used to insert the Neuralink implant into the brain, which is only performed by trained surgeons. Musk had earlier said that his long term goal is to bring down the cost from tens of thousands of dollars i.e. above 10 lakh to only thousands of dollars.
That is, we have to bring it below one lakh but this is a very ambitious target and at present the actual cost will be in multiple lakhs only, that is, around 10 lakhs, but as the technology matures and production scales up, the cost is expected to reduce; this pattern, that is, the pattern of cost reduction is quite common in the technology industry.
For example, the price of mobile phones and computers has decreased over time as production has increased. In the case of Neuralink too, as research progresses and procedures become more standardized, implantation costs are expected to decrease. The goal of Elon Musk and the Neuralink team is to make this technology more accessible and affordable so that its benefits can be made available to a wider population.
